This article is mostly aimed at men. The reason for that is women are not as often the target for fake dating profiles.
There are two main reasons why men are primarily targeted. The first reason is some guys seem to find it hilarious to create a fake dating profile. As creating a male profile will not bring them any attention, creating a female profile and winding other men up is the easiest way to get their kicks.
The second reason is that men are more susceptible to sexually orientated decisions. Basically, because they think with their balls, they are more open to being tricked and scammed.
So How Do You Tell If The Profile Is Fake?
Unfortunately there is no easy way to tell a fake online dating profile. However, there are some things you can do to minimise your chances of falling victim to a wind up, or worse a scam.
There are several tell-tale signs that will help you spot a fake profile:
One photo on the profile
The profile will usually only have one photo, often of an attractive and slightly sexual, but realistic looking woman. Unless they are completely stupid, the woman will look relatively every day but still attractive.
Sometimes, there will be more than one photo. If it is a group of photos, it will usually either be of the same woman, ripped straight from another dating profile, which is pretty hard to spot. Or it may be a collection of images which are of poor quality, making it difficult to tell if it is the same woman or not.
Contradictory facts on the profile
If you look carefully, because these profiles usually made with a minimum amount of attention, or if made by foreign scammers then mistakes in native details can be made.
Look for things which don’t seem right. Although it’s difficult to give you examples, your intuition will usually help you to put two and two together on this.
There will usually be a sexual reference on the profile
In order to hook rising, there will be some sexual innuendo on their page to activate that part of the male brain. If it is a normal profile which rambles on about boring stuff like how they like to walk their dog, it’s not going to attract desperate guys who will be more easily fooled.
Poor grammar on the profile
If set up as a scam by a foreign person, then there will inevitably be poor grammar or sentence structure in evidence.
In addition to poor grammar, most scam profiles tend to be short in duration, with the about me section usually consisting of one line like “Ask me if you want to know more…”. The hope is that with minimum effort, mens stupidity will make them reply anyway.
Learn To Weed Out Fake Dating Profiles
If you’re at all suspicious, ask them some questions to try and catch them out. Look for things on their profile which may not be immediately obvious to them. Especially in photos. If they have just ripped those photos from somewhere else, they may not have looked at key details in them.
So asking them a question about the small detail in a photo may expose. Say for example, the picture shows someone in a room that is untidy. In your message, say something like “I’m really tidy person, are you?”. If they say that they are, then confront them by saying “but your photo is taken in room looks very messy to me?”. If it’s not real, they may ignore you all the answer will try to gloss over this detail.
Also consider asking them key geographical questions, like have they been to something in your area you are familiar with.
Be wary of people asking to get in contact with you off the dating site quickly. If after the second message, they are asking for your phone number so they can speak to on WhatsApp, be careful.
There are several reasons I could be doing this, it could be to attempt to trick you into meeting them. It could be they just want to have a laugh at your expense. It could be they are trying to build your confidence to trick you in the future, or it could be they want to send you links to sites and make money from.
If you are wondering why they would want to trick you into meeting them, it’s usually not because they want to bash you over the head with a stick and steal your money. More usually, they will be perfect company. They will get you arouse, and then expect money for sex.
So Why Do People Create Fake Online Dating Profiles?
We will be touched on several reasons. Let’s go through the main list so you can be aware:
1. They are having a laugh. It could be schoolchildren, somebody was bored, your mates, or somebody with a screw loose. They basically just want to believe they have foled you so they can then ridicule you.
2. They want to build a relationship with you that will eventually lead to them attempting to scam you.
3. They want to get your details so they can start to steal other parts of your identity.
4. They have created a fake dating profile in order to spread links to sites they will get paid money if you visit. Usually affiliate links to porn or dating site
So is not easy to tell if it is a fake, but unless you are an idiot, your intuition will usually be giving you strong signals. A few intelligent questions will usually expose gaps in the story, or make them go silent.
Usually when they go silent, you will find they bounce back a few days later to have another go because they feel they have gained your attention.
If you are in any doubt about the validity of a profile, ignore them or block them. If you have a serious concern, and report into the dating site owner.
Or do what I do and bombard them with questions and crazy babble until they think you are completely insane and stop talking to you.
You can minimise the chances of being scammed by only using the biggest and more reputable dating sites, because they will be better policed both by staff and the people using them.
